Main Street is the heart and soul of America. It is the place where average, everyday Americans trade and produce. A vibrant, diverse main street is the brick and mortar soul of our nation and the place where democracy was born. It was not that long ago when Americans were known as a thrifty, innovative people rather than an indebted, demanding horde of consumers.
The word ‘consumer’ has replaced ‘citizen’ in the marketing materials of our government and our one party state. We are no longer constituents and citizens- people to be listened to and protected. Our government’s chief constituency is comprised of those who pay for the reelection of corrupt officials and our chief ‘citizens’ are the denizens of Wall Street and the holders of investment capital.
Any entrepreneur could tell you where his or her business profit comes from. Any businessperson could tell you why they choose to expand or contract their workforce. Expansion is undertaken in hopes of expanding to service new customers and clients- each employee placed to service increased demand and each let go if that demand contracts.
